Celebrating
Asian American Heritage Foundation (CAAHF) successfully
hosted ASIAFEST 2007, the 4th annual Plano Asian Heritage
Festival on May 6 in Haggard Park near Downtown Plano. The
Festival started at noon with a Lion Dance from the Chinese
Cultural Center. The weather was gorgeous and contributed to a
record attendance. There were well over 5000 people attending
the event. More than 70 display, activity, commercial, and food
vendor booths were sponsored by various ethnic Asian groups,
non-profit organizations, government and civic institutions, as
well as local businesses. From Chinese calligraphy to origami
and other arts and crafts, from hand painting to instrument
demonstrations, the festival provided an afternoon of fun for
the whole family. Live performances at the Haggard Park
gazebo stage included Lion Dances, folk dances from Okinawa,
classical Indian dances from the Ellora Center for Performing
Arts and other , classical Chinese dances from the Jiaping Shi
Dance School and songs from Japan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, India, and
other Asian countries. A fashion show from the kids at Hedgecoxe
Elementary School brought down the house with their colorful
costumes and smart and adorable presentations. The Chinese
Cultural fashion show presented by the Merit Chinese School is a
broadcast of ancient Chinese costumes. During the
festival, Mayor Evans formally proclaimed May 6-12, 2007 as the
City of Plano’s Asian Heritage Week.
