Celebrating Asian American Heritage Foundation (CAAHF) successfully hosted the 2006 Plano Asian American Heritage Festival on May 7 in Haggard Park near Downtown Plano. The Festival started at noon with a
Lion Dance from the Chinese Cultural Center. The weather was gorgeous and contributed to a record attendance. There were well over 4000 people attending the event. More than 50 display booths were sponsored by various ethnic Asian groups, non-profit organizations, government and civic institutions, as well as local businesses. Verizon brought its FIOS Hummer and the kids had a field day with it, not to mention some envious Dads!!! The UTD Chess Club had a lot of people stop by to try and beat the 2 chess players that UTD sent. There were many thoughtful looks as kids and parents pondered their moves. From Chinese calligraphy to origami and other arts and crafts, from face/hand painting to instrument demonstrations, the festival provided an afternoon of fun for the whole family. Crafts and cultural information were displayed from Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Singapore, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Live performances at the Haggard Park gazebo stage included Lion Dances, folk dances from Okinawa, classical Indian dances from the Ellora Center for Performing Arts, classical
Chinese dances from the Jiaping Shi Dance School and songs from Japan, Sri Lanka and other Asian countries. A fashion show from the kids at Hedgecoxe Elementary School brought down the house with their colorful costumes and smart and adorable presentations!!! During the festival, Mayor Evans formally proclaimed May 1-7, 2006 as the City of Plano’s Asian Heritage Week. Click here for the festival's outdoor program information brochure and flyer.
Other events to mark May as Asian Heritage Month are the ongoing Artists Exhibition at the Courtyard Theater and Displays of Asian art and artifacts at The Shops at WillowBend, the Plano Libraries: Park, Harrington, Christopher Parr, and Schimelpfenig. Artists from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Sri Lanka and the USA have displays of Calligraphy, watercolor and photographs of various Asian countries and artifacts from China. The exhibition will end on May 26th, 2006.
